How to rank on Google Maps

You know customers are searching for what you do, but the three businesses in the map pack are someone else, and your listing sits further down or nowhere. This guide explains how to rank on Google Maps by working on the factors Google actually names.

Quick answer

How do you rank on Google Maps?

To rank on Google Maps, make your Business Profile the most relevant and most trusted match for the search: the right primary category, complete services and details, a steady flow of genuine reviews and consistent business information across the web. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and distance is the one you cannot change.

Relevance is how closely your profile matches what someone typed. Your categories, services, description and the pages on your website all tell Google what you do. A roofer whose primary category is a general contractor, and whose services list is empty, is asking Google to guess, and Google tends to show the businesses that made the match obvious.

Prominence is how well known and trusted your business appears. Google builds that picture from reviews, mentions and links around the web, and consistent listings in directories. Google maps ranking also shifts with where the searcher stands, so a business can rank well beside its address and poorly a few kilometres away. A geo-grid check shows that spread across your area.

The steps

Five steps that improve Google Maps ranking

This is how to rank on Google Maps in practice. Work through the steps in order; the early ones are quick.

  1. 1. Fix the primary category

Choose the primary category that names your main service as precisely as Google allows, then add up to nine additional categories only for real secondary services. Check the categories used by businesses already appearing for your main search. This is where our Google Business Profile optimization work starts, because it is often the quickest relevance fix.

  2. 2. Fill in services and every detail

List each service you offer in plain words customers use, with a short description. Complete hours, holiday hours, attributes that apply, your website, and a description of up to 750 characters. Service-area businesses should list the real areas they cover, up to 20, within about two hours of driving from their base.

  3. 3. Build reviews steadily

Ask every customer for a review after the job, using your direct review link, and reply to each one. Recent, detailed reviews that mention the service and the area help customers choose and give Google more context. Follow our guide on how to get more Google reviews for CASL-aware requests.

  4. 4. Make your citations consistent

Your name, address and phone number should match exactly across YellowPages.ca, 411.ca, Canada411, Yelp, the BBB, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, your chamber of commerce and industry associations. Old addresses and tracking phone numbers create conflicting signals. Our local citation building service cleans these up.

  5. 5. Give your website location pages

Link the profile to a page that matches it: the location page for that address, or a service page for the area. Each page should state the business name, address and phone number as on the profile, describe the services in that area and give real local detail. Avoid near-identical pages for every town.

The three factors

Relevance, distance and prominence

These are the three factors Google names for local ranking. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

FactorWhat Google meansWhat you control
RelevanceHow well your profile matches the searchPrimary category, services, a complete profile and a website page that matches
DistanceHow far you are from the person searchingNot your location. List only service areas you really cover
ProminenceHow well known the business isReviews and replies, links from other websites, and accurate listings

Supporting work and limits

Photos, posts and what you cannot control

01

Photos

Add real photos regularly: your exterior and signage so people recognise you, your team, your vehicles and finished work. Photos help a searcher choose between three listings. Avoid stock images and photos with text plastered over them, which look like advertising rather than evidence.

02

Posts

Posts show you are active and give customers a reason to call now: a seasonal service, holiday hours or an offer. Treat them as a way to convert people who already see your profile. Our guide to Google Business Profile posts covers what to publish through the year.

03

Distance

Google weighs how far the searcher, or the place they name, is from you. You cannot move your address closer to every customer, and a fake or virtual office address to get closer breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension. Strengthen relevance and prominence instead.

04

Search behaviour

Results change with the exact words used, the device and where the person is standing, so a single search from your own desk tells you little. Track a set of real searches from several points across your area over time. A free local SEO audit includes a geo-grid snapshot of exactly that.

Common mistakes

What helps, and what backfires

Backfires

  • Adding keywords or city names to your business name
  • Virtual offices or co-working desks as fake locations
  • Buying reviews or asking only happy customers
  • Duplicate profiles for the same location

Helps

  • A precise primary category
  • Services written in customers' words
  • A steady flow of genuine reviews
  • Matching details in every directory

Ask about your profile

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

It depends on how far behind you start and how active other businesses in your area are. Category and detail fixes are quick to make, while reviews and citations build over months. Anyone promising a set position by a set date is guessing, because Google decides rankings and they move constantly.

Does paying for Google Ads improve my Maps ranking?

No. Google charges nothing to appear in Maps or the local pack, and Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Ad spend is not one of those factors. Advertising can put you in front of searchers, but it does not move your Business Profile up the free results.

Why do I rank well at my shop but not across town?

Because distance is one of Google's three main local factors, and results are calculated from where the searcher is. You will naturally rank best close to your address. To compete further out, strengthen relevance and prominence with a precise category, complete services, a location page and steady reviews.

Should I put keywords in my business name?

No. Google's guidelines require your real business name, as used on signage and paperwork. Adding services or city names can lead to the name being edited, reports from other users and suspension. If a keyword belongs in your name, it must already be part of your legal or trading name.

Do citations still matter for Google Maps ranking?

Yes, as a consistency and trust signal. Google looks for the same name, address and phone number across the web. In Canada that means directories such as YellowPages.ca, 411.ca, Canada411, Yelp, the BBB, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places. Conflicting old details are worth fixing before adding more.

Can I rank in a city where I have no address?

Sometimes, if you are a service-area business and the city is within your real service area, but distance still counts against you. You cannot create a profile at an address you do not occupy. A strong service page for that city on your website helps relevance without breaking guidelines.
