Google Business Profile optimization, done once and done properly
Your profile was set up years ago, the category is close but not quite right, and businesses you know are smaller sit above you in the map pack. Google Business Profile optimization rebuilds the profile around how Google ranks local results.

What does Google Business Profile optimization involve?
Google Business Profile optimization is a one-off project that brings every part of your profile up to standard: categories, services, description, hours, attributes, photos and the website page it links to. The aim is a profile that matches what you actually do, so Google can show it for the searches that should find you.
It is the same work sold as GMB optimization services, or called Google My Business optimization; the product was renamed Google Business Profile in late 2021, but many people still use the old names. The profile itself is free, and Google charges nothing to appear in Maps or the local pack.
Optimization is not the same as filling every box. Google's guidelines limit what can go in the business name, where you can say you are based and how you can ask for reviews, and breaking them can lead to a suspension. Good Google Maps SEO works inside those rules, not around them.

What's included
What we set up in your profile
Done by hand, inside your profile.
01
Categories
We choose the most specific primary category for your main service, then add only the additional categories, up to nine, that describe work you genuinely offer. Categories tell Google which searches the profile is relevant to, so a near miss here is costly.
02
Services and products
Each service you offer gets a clear name and a short description, and products are added where they help customers compare. This lets the profile match specific searches, such as a single repair or treatment, that the category alone would miss.
03
Business description
A description of up to 750 characters that says what you do, who you do it for and where, written for customers rather than packed with keywords and city names. It should read like the opening of a good sales conversation.
04
Address and service areas
Storefronts get an exact address with a correct A1A 1A1 postal code. Service-area businesses hide the address and list up to 20 service areas within about two hours' drive of their base. We never use virtual offices or co-working desks to fake a location.
05
Hours and special hours
Regular opening hours plus special hours for Victoria Day, Canada Day, the Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Boxing Day and your province's Family Day or its equivalent, so customers never drive over to a locked door on a holiday weekend.
06
Attributes and Q&A
We set the attributes Google offers for your category, such as accessibility details or service options, choosing only those that are true. Where Google shows Q&A on your profile, we add clear answers to the questions customers ask most often.
07
Photos
Real, recent photos of the outside of your premises, the interior, your team, vehicles and finished work replace stock images and old shots. Customers use them to check they have the right place and to judge the quality of your work.
We correct the core directory listings, such as YellowPages.ca and Yelp, that disagree with the profile, and set up a simple, guideline-safe way to ask customers for reviews, so that prominence can keep building after the optimization project itself is finished.

How ranking works
Relevance, distance and prominence
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, which is why categories, services and the description matter, and it is where optimization helps most directly.
Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the place named in the search. You cannot change it, and a fake address to get closer breaks Google's guidelines. Prominence is how well known your business is, built over time through reviews, consistent listings and your website. Our guide on how to rank on Google Maps covers all three.
The process
How the optimization runs
Each step is recorded, so you can see what changed.
1. Audit
We record your current profile, score it out of 100 and run a geo-grid snapshot for your main search. That gives a baseline to measure the optimization against, and it shows whether anything risky needs fixing before the main changes.
2. Fix and optimize
We rework categories, services, products, description, hours, attributes and photos directly in your profile ourselves and remove anything that breaks the guidelines. Changes to key details can lead Google to ask for re-verification, so we plan and time those changes carefully.
3. Reviews and citations
We correct your name, address and phone number on the main Canadian directories, starting with the worst mismatches, and set up a review request process. As CASL requires, request emails and texts identify your business, rely on consent and include a way to unsubscribe.
4. Posts and content
We publish a first set of posts and photos and give you clear, written notes on the website pages that should match the profile, so your site supports the same categories, services and areas the profile now describes in full detail.
5. Track and report
Once the changes have had time to settle, we re-run the geo-grid against the baseline and send a short report from your own Google accounts showing what changed, what did not, and what we would do next, if anything at all.

Common mistakes
What holds profiles back
The problems we fix most often, all of them avoidable:
Wrong primary category: a broad choice such as Contractor when Roofing contractor fits, or a side service set as the main one
Missing services: an empty or short services list, so the profile only matches general searches
Inconsistent NAP: an old address on one directory, a tracking number on another, a different suite number on the website
Keyword stuffing: adding Best Plumber Toronto to the business name breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension
Stale photos: years-old or stock images that make customers doubt the other details too
One-off or ongoing
Optimization or monthly management?
An optimization fixes the foundations once: categories, services, description, hours, photos and the core listings. Google Business Profile management keeps them in place every month, with posts, photos, review replies, edit monitoring and geo-grid tracking. Many businesses start with the optimization and decide on management later.

FAQ
Google Business Profile optimization questions, answered
The things Canadian business owners ask before they commission anything. If yours is not here, put it in the form.
Still have a question?
Ask us directly. A specialist reads every message.
GMB optimization is the older name for Google Business Profile optimization. Google My Business became Google Business Profile in late 2021, but the work is the same: choosing categories, adding services, writing the description, setting hours and service areas, and keeping everything within Google's guidelines.
02
How is map pack SEO different from ordinary SEO?
Map pack SEO targets the local pack, the group of usually three businesses shown with a map above the ordinary results. It leans on your Google Business Profile, reviews and listings, while ordinary SEO leans on your website. The two support each other, especially through location pages.
03
Can optimization get my profile suspended?
Optimization done within Google's guidelines should lower the risk, not raise it. Suspensions happen because of guideline problems such as keywords in the business name, a disallowed address, a wrong category or duplicate listings. Changing key details can also prompt re-verification, so we plan those changes and keep evidence ready.
04
How many categories should my profile have?
As many as accurately describe your business, and no more. Google allows one primary category and up to nine additional ones. Pick the most specific primary category for your main service, then add others only for work you genuinely offer, because unrelated categories make the profile less clear.
05
Do I need monthly management after a one-off optimization?
Not necessarily. A one-off optimization fixes the profile's foundations, and some businesses then keep it up themselves. Monthly management suits businesses that want posts, photos, review replies and edit monitoring handled for them, with geo-grid ranking tracked over time. The free audit helps you decide.
06
Will my Google Maps ranking improve straight after optimization?
It depends on what was holding the profile back, and nobody can promise a position. Fixing a wrong category or missing services can help relevance fairly directly, while prominence builds over time through reviews and listings. We measure with a geo-grid before and after, so you can see what moved.
