Guide: profile posts

Google Business Profile posts that earn the click

Your profile shows the same old photo and an offer from two winters ago, and a customer comparing three listings has no sign you are still busy. Google Business Profile posts fix that, if they are specific, timely and written for the person about to call.

Quick answer

What should you put in Google Business Profile posts?

Google Business Profile posts are short updates, offers or events published on your profile, where people see them while deciding whether to contact you. The best ones are specific and timely: a seasonal service, a change to your holiday hours, a real offer with clear terms, or an event with a date, each with one good photo and one call to action.

Think of posts as conversion content first. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so posts are not a shortcut up the rankings; our guide on how to rank on Google Maps covers what is. Their job is to help someone who has already found you choose you.

Canada gives you a natural calendar to post against. Weather drives demand for many trades and services, provincial holidays change opening hours, and Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday in October, not in November. If you serve Quebec, the Charter of the French Language governs commercial communication there, so plan French posts for French-speaking customers.

How to write one

Writing a Google Business Profile post in five steps

Each post should take minutes. If your profile basics are not in place yet, start with our Google Business Profile guide.

  1. 1. Choose one message

Decide the single thing the reader should know or do: book a furnace tune-up before the cold, see the new patio menu, note the Canada Day hours. A post that tries to cover three services gets skimmed and ignored. Open with the point, since only the first line or two may show before the reader taps.

  2. 2. Write for the customer

Use the words customers use, name the area where it is natural, and keep it short. Mention a real detail: the street you just worked on, the product that just arrived. Do not pack it with keywords or lists of cities, which reads as spam to the customer you are trying to win.

  3. 3. Add one real photo

Use your own photo of the work, team, premises or product, taken in good light and relevant to the message. Avoid stock images, heavy text overlays and collages. Make sure you have permission from anyone recognisable, and never post customer details, addresses or licence plates.

  4. 4. Add a link and call to action

Choose the action that fits: call, book, learn more or visit a page. Link to the most relevant page on your site, not the home page by default, and add tracking parameters to the link so you can see visits from the post in your analytics.

  5. 5. Check and schedule the next one

Read it on a phone before publishing. Check prices, dates and hours, and that offers state their terms. Then note the next post in your calendar. A steady rhythm you can keep, such as weekly or every other week, beats a burst of activity followed by months of silence.

A Canadian calendar

What to post through the Canadian year

Use these as prompts, then set matching special hours in the profile itself, because a post is not a substitute for correct hours.

Winter

January to March

Snow, ice and cold drive searches for heating, plumbing, towing and snow removal. Post what you are doing about them. Mark Family Day or your provincial equivalent, such as Louis Riel Day in Manitoba, Heritage Day in Nova Scotia or Islander Day in PEI.

Spring

April to June

Spring clean-ups, roof checks after winter, landscaping, patios and renovations. Victoria Day weekend is a natural launch point for seasonal services and changed hours. Show finished work as the season starts, when people are planning.

Summer

July and August

Canada Day hours and events, summer menus, air conditioning, cottage season and travel. Post the Civic Holiday hours in provinces that observe it. Events such as open houses and community days suit the event post type.

Fall

September to November

Labour Day, back-to-school, furnace tune-ups and winter preparation. Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, so post hours and holiday menus early. Mention Remembrance Day hours where your province observes it.

December

Holidays

Christmas and Boxing Day hours, gift cards, year-end appointments and closures. Post hours well before the holidays and make sure the special hours in your profile match, so customers do not arrive at a locked door.

Common mistakes

What to post, and what not to

Posts must follow Google's content policies like the rest of the profile. For regulated professions, check your regulator's advertising standard before posting offers or claims.

Do not post

  • Keyword lists or strings of city names
  • Offers with hidden terms or no end date
  • Claims of being the best that you cannot back up
  • Customer photos or details without permission

Post

  • Specific, dated news and offers
  • Your own photos of real work
  • Hours changes before every holiday
  • French posts where you serve French-speaking customers

FAQ

Google Business Profile posts questions, answered

The things Canadian business owners ask before they commission anything. If yours is not here, put it in the form.

Still have a question?

Ask us directly. A specialist reads every message.

Ask about your profile

Do Google Business Profile posts help ranking?

Not directly in any way Google has stated. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Posts earn their place by helping people who already see your profile decide to call, book or visit, and by showing the business is active. Treat them as conversion content.

How often should I post?

Post on a rhythm you can keep, such as weekly or every other week, with extra posts around holidays and busy seasons. Consistency matters more than volume. A profile with a steady trail of recent, useful posts looks more active to customers than one with a burst of posts and then silence.

What makes a good offer post?

A genuine offer with clear terms. State what is included, the start and end dates, any conditions and the price in Canadian dollars, saying whether GST or HST is extra. If you are in a regulated profession, check your regulator's advertising standard before promoting discounts or making comparative claims.

Should I post in French?

If you serve customers in Quebec, yes, plan for it. The Charter of the French Language governs French in commercial communication in Quebec, so take advice on what applies to you. Outside Quebec, posting in French makes sense wherever a meaningful share of your customers prefer it.

What photos should I use in posts?

Your own, relevant photos taken in good light: the finished job, the team, the premises or the product the post is about. Avoid stock images, collages and heavy text overlays. Get permission from anyone recognisable, and never show customer addresses, licence plates or personal details without their consent.

Can someone manage posts for me?

Yes. You can give a manager access to your profile while keeping ownership yourself. A good manager plans posts around your seasons and holidays, uses your real photos and checks every offer and hours change with you first, so nothing goes live that you have not approved.
