Quick answer
When someone in Tampa types "emergency plumber" or a parent in a Dallas suburb asks for a pediatric dentist, Google answers with a map and three businesses before any website appears. Local SEO is the work of earning a place in that block, in Google Maps and Apple Maps, and in the local results underneath it.
In practice it has five parts: a verified Google Business Profile in the right categories; the same name, address and phone number across the data sources Google, Apple and Bing cross-check; a steady flow of genuine reviews, with replies; a page for each real location or main service area; and measurement in calls, direction requests and bookings.
SpiderHunts Technologies Ltd is a UK-registered company with a registered office in London and a team that works remotely. We have no office, staff or legal entity in the United States. Everything is done online, in your accounts, with video calls in your working hours.
What we do
Eight areas of work. Few businesses need all of them, and the free check shows which ones are costing you calls.
Verification, categories, services, hours, attributes, photos and description, plus merging duplicates and catching suggested edits that changed your details.
A routine for asking every customer, with links and templates your staff can send, and replies written in your voice. No bought reviews and no gating.
Your name, address and phone number made consistent across data sources such as Data Axle and Foursquare, and the directories your sector uses.
Apple Business Connect for iPhone users, Bing Places for Bing's local results, and Yelp where your customers read it. Many businesses claim Google and nothing else.
One page per real location or main area served, with services, area covered and the questions local customers ask. Not a city name swapped in.
LocalBusiness structured data with the right subtype, consistent details site-wide, fast mobile pages and click-to-call that works, fixed at the template.
Profiles grouped and managed together, a crawlable store locator, and one routine for hours, holiday hours, moves and closures.
Tagged profile links in Google Analytics 4, call tracking that does not break your listings, and a monthly note on calls, directions and bookings by location.
How it works
Relevance, distance and prominence. Knowing which one you are losing on tells you where the effort should go.
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Two people searching the same phrase a few miles apart can see different map results, so one screenshot of your ranking says very little. We check visibility on a grid of points across the area you serve.
Distance is set by your verified address, or by where Google places a service-area business. No agency can move it, and an offer to rank you in a town by creating an address there is an offer to get your profile suspended.
| Signal | What it means | What we can change |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile and website match the search | Categories, services, description, location pages and the words on them |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher or the place named | Nothing directly; we make sure your address or service area is accurate and verified |
| Prominence | How well known and well regarded the business is | Reviews and replies, consistent listings, local links and mentions, and your website's strength |
Your setup
The right setup depends on how customers reach you. Getting it wrong is a common reason a profile is suspended.
A storefront business, such as a clinic, store or law office, serves customers at its own address. A service-area business, such as a plumber, roofer or cleaner, goes to its customers. Google asks these businesses to hide their address and list up to 20 areas they serve, within about two hours' drive of their base. The profile is still verified from a real location.
A multi-location brand needs one profile per staffed location, grouped in one account. Doctors, dentists, lawyers and real estate agents can also have practitioner profiles, which can support or compete with the main listing depending on how they are set up.
What does not work is an address you do not operate from. PO boxes, mailbox stores and virtual offices are not eligible, and adding city names or service keywords to your business name breaks Google's guidelines. Competitors report it, and a suspended profile can take years of reviews with it.
Reviews
Reviews are what your customers see first, and the part of local SEO with the most rules.
Asking for reviews is allowed, and it works best as a routine: an email after every job, or a text to customers who have agreed to receive texts from you, with a direct link to your profile. Google does not allow review gating, meaning asking only the customers you expect to be happy, or offering a reward for a review. In the US there is a federal layer too: the FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials covers fake reviews, rewards tied to a positive or negative review, and suppressing negative ones.
Yelp works differently. It asks businesses not to request reviews at all and filters reviews it thinks were solicited, so there the approach is to complete the page, reply to reviews and let your Google routine do the asking.
In dental and medical practices, confirming in a reply that a reviewer is a patient can itself be a privacy problem. We draft replies for you to approve. This is not legal advice; your counsel has the final word on your review process.
Working remotely
Everything in local SEO lives in online accounts. What matters is that they stay yours.
You add us as a manager on your Google Business Profile and give named access to Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and your website. Ownership stays with you, so you can remove us at any time and keep every review and photo. Anything that needs someone on site, such as a verification video, your staff do from a written brief.
If you found us by searching for an SEO company near me, notice what that search did: Google ranked the results by where you were. Your customers' searches work the same way, which is why your address and listings matter far more than where your agency sits.
Choosing well
Local SEO is easy to sell and easy to fake. Three questions help.
Who will own the profile? You should be the primary owner of your Google Business Profile and every listing, with the provider added as a manager. How will success be measured? Calls, direction requests and booked jobs by location tell you more than a ranking report taken from one point in the city.
What will they refuse to do? Fake addresses, keyword-stuffed names, bought reviews and near-identical city pages can lift a listing for a while, then cost you the profile. Our guide to choosing an SEO company in the USA covers the wider questions, and they apply to us as much as anyone.
The gap
Customers like you, yet the three spots on the map go to a competitor down the road. The cause is rarely one thing.
Not sure why a competitor outranks you on the map?
The free check compares your profile, categories, listings and reviews with the businesses that do appear, and tells you which gaps you can close and which come down to distance.
Examples
Illustrative examples of common situations and the work that addresses them. They are not named client projects or results.
For example, an HVAC company around Phoenix might appear for its name but not for 'AC repair', because its primary category is too broad, its service area is one ZIP code and no page on its site covers the towns it serves.
Aim: being considered for service searches, not only the brand
A practice in the Chicago suburbs might have its own profile, one from its old address and one for a dentist who has left. Reviews are split across all three.
Aim: one accurate practice profile, duplicates resolved
A restaurant group in Denver might move one location, and months later Apple Maps still shows the old address. The work is updating each data source, then checking which have caught up.
Aim: every map showing where you actually are
How we work
The check is free. After that the work is ordered by value, and nothing changes on your profile or website without your approval.
Profile, categories, duplicates, reviews and listings compared with the businesses that appear for your main searches, across your area. Findings in writing.
Duplicates resolved, details made consistent across the listings that matter, categories corrected and tracking set up.
Location and service-area pages, local schema, photos and a review routine your staff can run.
A short monthly note with calls, direction requests, website clicks and bookings by location, from your own accounts. If something did not work, we say so.
Clear scope · Regular demos · Full handover
Honest fit
Local SEO pays when people search for what you do near where you are. If they do not, we will tell you on the first call.
Where you show up
In many US service categories, such as plumbing, HVAC and law, Local Services Ads sit above the map. Each place is won differently.
| Map pack and Google Maps | Organic local results | Local Services Ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The three listings with a map, and the Maps app | Your website's pages in the normal results | Paid listings with a Google verification badge, at the top of many service searches |
| What decides it | Relevance, distance and prominence of your profile | Your website's content, structure and authority | Your budget, reviews, responsiveness and proximity, after Google screens the business |
| How you pay | No cost per click; the work is setup and upkeep | No cost per click; the work is pages and fixes | Pay per lead, and it stops when spending stops |
Cost
One clean profile and fifty messy ones are different jobs, so the check is free and everything after it is quoted in writing.

FAQ
What US owners and office managers ask before they hand over access to their profile.
Still have a question?
Ask us directly. A senior engineer reads every question.
Ask about your projectYes. SpiderHunts Technologies Ltd is registered in the United Kingdom, with a registered office at 182-184 High Street N, London E6 2JA, and the whole team works remotely. We have no US office, entity or staff. Local rankings depend on your address and listings, not ours, and both are managed online.
Not honestly. The map pack ranks businesses partly by distance from the searcher, and the only legitimate way to be near more searchers is a real, staffed location. A location page can still rank in the normal results for a nearby city you genuinely serve.
The local search check is free. Setup and cleanup are priced in a written quote after a free call, because one clean profile and a group of locations with duplicates are very different jobs. For ongoing search work, our Get Found in AI Search retainer starts from £1,500 a month; local-only upkeep is quoted separately.
If customers do not visit you, no. Google asks service-area businesses to hide their address and list the areas they serve. You still verify from your real address, but it is not shown publicly, and hiding it does not stop you appearing on the map around your base.
Usually, yes. We find and fix the cause, such as a keyword in the name or an ineligible address, and prepare the evidence the appeal needs, such as a business license and photos of signage. Google decides the outcome, so nobody can promise reinstatement.
Corrections inside your profile, such as a better primary category or a merged duplicate, can show once Google has processed the edit. Other data sources update on their own schedules, and some lag for months. Reviews and local authority build slowly. We cannot give you a date, but the written check says which fixes we would expect to show first and why.
No, and be wary of anyone who does. Map results change with the searcher's location and what competitors do, and Google decides what it shows. What we commit to is doing the work within Google's rules and reporting what changed in calls and visits.
It can be done safely. The usual approach is a tracking number as the primary phone on the profile and your main number as an additional phone, so the listing still matches your website and directories while you see which calls came from the profile.
Work is quoted in pounds sterling and invoiced in US dollars at the rate agreed in the quote, so you know the dollar figure before work starts. We work against a written scope, can complete a W-8BEN-E for your accounts team, and accept ACH, wire or card.
