Local SEO in Vancouver

Local SEO in Vancouver rarely stops at the city line: customers in Burnaby, Richmond or North Vancouver search with their own municipality in mind, and a profile set up only for Vancouver can be invisible to them. If you are missing from the map pack across the Lower Mainland, that is where we start.

Quick answer

What does local SEO in Vancouver involve?

Local SEO in Vancouver is the work of getting your Google Business Profile, website and reviews into the map pack for the neighbourhoods and Lower Mainland municipalities you serve. Google says local results rest mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so the setup has to match where your customers actually are.

The Lower Mainland is a set of separate cities that customers treat as separate places. Someone in Coquitlam looking for a dentist expects results near them, not across town in Kitsilano. Service areas, website pages and reviews should reflect the municipalities you really cover, and nothing beyond them, because listing places you never visit helps nobody.

Seasons and languages add two more layers. Wet winters change what people need from trades, summer brings visitors to tourism and hospitality businesses, and many customers search in Punjabi, Mandarin or Cantonese as well as English. A profile handles some of this well and some not at all, and it helps to know which is which.

Languages

Searches in Punjabi, Mandarin and Cantonese

A profile has one name and one description, so most language work happens around it.

What a profile cannot do

  • Hold a separate description for each language
  • Use a translated name not on your real signage
  • Carry foreign-language keywords in the business name
  • Make you relevant in a language your site never uses

What a profile can do

  • Show real photos of signage or menus in the languages you use
  • Carry review replies in the reviewer's language, written well
  • Say which languages your staff speak, if true
  • Link to website pages in each language you serve

Lower Mainland

Each municipality is its own search

Customers search with their own city's name, and Google weighs distance from the searcher.

Burnaby

Burnaby

Burnaby sits between Vancouver and the Tri-Cities, and town centres such as Metrotown and Brentwood draw their own searches. A business based in downtown Vancouver usually needs reviews, photos and website pages that mention Burnaby before it appears there.

Richmond

Richmond

Richmond is its own city south of Vancouver, across the Fraser River. Many businesses there serve customers in Mandarin and Cantonese as well as English, so review replies, photos and website pages in those languages do more than anything added to the name.

Surrey

Surrey

Surrey has town centres of its own, including Guildford, Newton, Fleetwood, Cloverdale and South Surrey, and many customers who search in Punjabi. List Surrey as a service area only if you really travel there. Our Surrey page covers the city in depth.

North Shore

North and West Vancouver

North Vancouver is two municipalities, the City and the District, and West Vancouver is a third. Customers there often search by those names. Trades that cross the bridges should list each one they serve rather than assume a Vancouver service area covers them.

Tri-Cities

Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody

The Tri-Cities are three separate municipalities and three separate searches. A Coquitlam business serving all three should list each as a service area and give each a page on its website, written for that city rather than copied with the name swapped.

In the city

Vancouver neighbourhoods

Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Yaletown and Commercial Drive behave like small markets. A café in Kitsilano is found mostly by people nearby. Neighbourhood names in photos, posts and website copy help, but distance still decides much of who sees your business.

How it works

A year of work, planned around the seasons

Map pack SEO in Vancouver works best when the profile is ready before demand changes, not after.

  1. 1. Audit and grid

We score your profile out of 100 and run a geo-grid for your main search across the neighbourhoods and municipalities you serve. That shows whether you reach Burnaby or the North Shore at all, or only the streets around your address.

  2. 2. Fix the foundations

We set the primary category and up to nine additional ones, rewrite the 750-character description, list services and set service areas to the municipalities you really cover, following our Google Business Profile optimization service, adapted for the Lower Mainland and its separate cities.

  3. 3. Prepare for the season

Before the autumn rain, roofers, gutter cleaners and drainage businesses need services, photos and posts ready for leak and moss searches; see our page on SEO for roofers. Tourism and hospitality businesses do the same before summer, with hours, menus and patio details.

  4. 4. Reviews, listings and reports

We set up review requests around CASL consent and an unsubscribe link, and make your details match on YellowPages.ca, Yelp, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Then we rerun the grid and report from your own Google accounts, by municipality, so you see whether Richmond moved while Coquitlam did not.

Starting point

What we would look at first for a Vancouver business

For a Google Business Profile in Vancouver, we would check where it can appear at all before any content work. Comparing an SEO company in Vancouver? Ask to see checks like these first; ours come with the free audit.

  • Whether your service areas name real municipalities you travel to, rather than a broad region
  • Whether your address and postal code match your website and directories exactly
  • Whether your website has pages for the municipalities and neighbourhoods you serve
  • Whether photos and posts are ready for the season your business depends on
  • Whether reviews written in other languages have replies

FAQ

Local SEO Vancouver questions, answered

The things Canadian business owners ask before they commission anything. If yours is not here, put it in the form.

Still have a question?

Ask us directly. A specialist reads every message.

Ask about your profile

Should my Vancouver business list Burnaby, Richmond and Surrey as service areas?

List them only if you actually travel there to serve customers. Google allows up to 20 service areas within about two hours of driving, so most Lower Mainland municipalities fit. Each listed area should match real work you do there and, ideally, a website page written for that city.

Can a shop in Kitsilano rank for customers in Yaletown or on Commercial Drive?

Sometimes, but distance limits it. Google weighs how far the searcher is from your business, so a Kitsilano storefront is shown mostly to people nearby. Strong reviews, accurate categories and useful website content can widen the radius, though no one can guarantee a position across the whole city.

Should my profile description be in Punjabi or Chinese as well as English?

You have one description of up to 750 characters, so most businesses write it in their main customer language. If staff serve customers in Punjabi, Mandarin or Cantonese, say so plainly. Fuller content in those languages belongs on your website, linked from the profile.

How should a Vancouver roofer prepare the profile for the rainy season?

Start before the autumn rain. Add the leak repair, gutter and moss removal services you really offer, upload recent photos of real jobs, check your hours and plan posts for the months people notice problems. Ask happy customers for reviews with consent and an unsubscribe link.

Do tourism and hospitality businesses need different profile work in summer?

Yes, the details change. Visitors search near where they are standing, usually on a phone, so hours, menus, photos, attributes and holiday hours for Canada Day and BC Day need to be right before the season starts. Replies to visitors' reviews also help the next traveller decide.

Is North Vancouver one service area or two?

Two. The City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver are separate municipalities, and West Vancouver is a third. If you serve the North Shore, list each one you actually travel to, and give your website a page that names them correctly.
