Operations software & internal tools
Admin panels, operations portals, approval workflows and the systems no vendor sells as you need them, built around how your team actually works rather than around a product roadmap.
We are a UK-registered company with a remote engineering team, working with Boston companies: custom software, internal systems, AI and machine learning across life sciences and biotech, healthcare, higher education, asset management and robotics. Calls, demos and reviews are scheduled in your Eastern Time working hours, your systems run in a US cloud region you control, and contracts are in US dollars.
Thanks, that’s with us.

Technologies we build with
Quick answer
SpiderHunts Technologies is a software and AI development company registered in the United Kingdom, with a registered office in London, working remotely. We have no Boston office, no Massachusetts entity and nobody on the payroll in the United States. We work with Boston companies remotely: calls and demos scheduled in your Eastern Time working hours, a shared Slack or Teams channel, code in your own repositories, and infrastructure in a US cloud region you control.
Boston is a research city, where the software usually sits next to something scientific or regulated. Most of what we are asked for in Greater Boston is operational: the system between the platforms you already run, the workflow nobody has automated, the reporting rebuilt by hand every month.
We would rather tell you a problem does not need custom software than sell you a build. If configuration or a better report solves it, we will say so.
What we build
The systems that sit between the platforms you already bought: built on your data, released into your own cloud account.
Admin panels, operations portals, approval workflows and the systems no vendor sells as you need them, built around how your team actually works rather than around a product roadmap.
Sample and chain-of-custody tracking, assay and instrument data capture, study records and LIMS integration for biotech companies and research teams across Cambridge and Greater Boston.
Grant and award tracking, research administration, student-facing portals and reporting for universities, colleges and the spin-outs that come out of them.
Client and fund reporting, reconciliation and break resolution, fee calculation and operational tooling for asset managers and financial firms whose rules are too specific for a vendor product.
Fleet telemetry, diagnostics, service dashboards and customer portals for robotics and hardware companies, with every alert, firmware version and service action recorded.
Referral, scheduling, intake and internal reporting tools for health systems and clinics, built to the technical safeguards HIPAA expects and integrated through HL7 or FHIR interfaces.
Extraction from lab reports, grant documents, invoices and clinical correspondence, forecasting and anomaly detection in assay, operational or financial data, and agents that triage with a person approving.
US-region infrastructure as code, data pipelines and warehouses, CI/CD with review gates and scanning, and monitoring an on-call engineer can actually read at 6am Eastern.
Why it matters
Nobody sets out to run a sample inventory, a grant report or a client reporting cycle on spreadsheets. The platform covers most of the job, a gap appears, someone builds a workaround, and the workaround becomes the process.
Building software in Boston?
Tell us what you are trying to fix. We will give you an honest view on whether it needs custom software, and a realistic range if it does.
Examples
Typical problems Boston teams bring to us, and the software that addresses them. Illustrative examples of what we build, not client results.
Chain of custody, assay results and study records in a system rather than in spreadsheets and a lab notebook.
Aim: an audit trail that already exists.
Referrals routed on arrival and appointments scheduled against realistic durations rather than a fixed slot.
Aim: clinics that run closer to time.
Reporting assembled from source systems instead of rebuilt by hand each quarter.
Aim: reporting that does not depend on one person.
Device data collected, monitored and turned into a service view rather than sitting on the machine.
Aim: knowing a unit is failing before the customer calls.
Research code turned into something a customer can run, monitor and be billed for.
Aim: a product rather than a script.
Grant milestones, spend and reporting obligations tracked in one place.
Aim: a report that is not a fire drill.
How we work
Short stages with a clear output each time, arranged so the time difference is never the reason something waits a day.
A 30-minute call booked in your Eastern Time working hours. We talk through the problem, the systems involved and the constraints, then send a written quote with scope and exclusions.
We agree which cloud account and US region the work runs in, who grants access to the LIMS, ERP or clinical systems involved, and whether anything touches personal, health or research data before code is written.
Work lands in your repository from the start. There is a written update every day and a demo each week, both inside your working hours rather than ours.
LIMS and instrument exports, ERP interfaces and clinical feeds are tackled early, because that is where operational projects usually come unstuck. Automated tests and scans run in the pipeline.
We release in stages with monitoring switched on. Documentation, runbooks and code stay in your accounts and repositories, and ongoing development is quoted separately if you want it.
Clear scope · Regular demos · Full handover
Is it right for you?
We would rather tell you to buy a product or hire a firm in Kendall Square than take on a project that will not work remotely.
Technology
Mainstream languages and platforms, the integration formats Boston labs, hospitals and financial firms actually speak, and deployment into your own US cloud account.
Sectors
Boston runs on life sciences and biotech, healthcare, higher education, asset management and robotics. That mix produces a particular class of software problem: operational data in volume, systems that cannot be switched off, and a regulator or an auditor somewhere in the chain.
FAQ
Common questions from Boston businesses about working with us.
Still have a question?
Ask us directly. A senior engineer reads every question.
Ask about your projectNo. We have no US entity, no Massachusetts office and nobody on the payroll in the United States. SpiderHunts Technologies Ltd is UK-registered, with a registered office in London, and the whole team works remotely. We work with Boston clients remotely, by video, and schedule calls, demos and reviews in your Eastern Time working hours.
Yes, but only under the right agreements and controls, settled before work starts rather than afterwards. That usually means a business associate agreement where your counsel decides one is needed, access limited to named engineers, and de-identified or synthetic data in development. We are engineers, not your compliance function, so the policies and the final judgement stay with your privacy and legal teams.
Yes. The gap between research code and something a customer can run, monitor and pay for is usually wider than founders expect, and it is worth scoping honestly before committing. We start by separating what the research code proves from what the product needs: authentication, data handling, monitoring, billing and tests. If a licence agreement limits the code, your tech transfer office should confirm that first.
Projects are quoted in pounds sterling and invoiced in US dollars at the rate agreed in the quote, so both sides know the dollar figure before work starts. Invoices are raised by SpiderHunts Technologies Ltd against a written scope with milestones, and we can complete a W-8BEN-E for your accounts payable team. Payment by ACH, wire or card. Your legal team is welcome to work from your own master services agreement rather than ours.
In your accounts, not ours. Boston teams commonly choose AWS us-east-1 in Northern Virginia, Azure East US or Google Cloud us-east4, all on the East Coast, with AWS us-east-2 in Ohio as a common second region. Code goes to your GitHub, GitLab or Azure DevOps. Engineers get named, least-privilege access you can revoke at any time, and production data stays out of development environments unless you ask otherwise.
It shapes the design. 201 CMR 17.00 sets minimum standards for anyone holding personal information about Massachusetts residents, including a written information security programme, access controls, secure authentication, monitoring and, where technically feasible, encryption of data sent over public networks or held on laptops. So we build encryption, least-privilege roles, logging and vendor records in from the start. Your written programme and the legal judgement stay with your counsel and security team.
Yes, on the systems around the science rather than the science itself. That means sample and chain-of-custody tracking, assay and instrument data capture, study records, inventory and integration with your LIMS or electronic lab notebook. Where GxP or 21 CFR Part 11 expectations apply, your quality team defines the requirements and we build audit trails, electronic signatures and validation evidence to match. We are engineers, not a validation consultancy.
Yes. Boston firms often have a well-served front office and a back office held together by spreadsheets, so that is where we work: client and fund reporting, reconciliation and break resolution, fee calculation and operational tooling where the rules are too firm-specific for a vendor product. We are software engineers, not an investment adviser or a compliance consultancy. Your compliance team defines the rules; we build systems that enforce them with audit logs.
That is usually what we recommend. Boston organisations, from labs to universities, tend to carry a finance or ERP system that is well embedded in procurement and reporting, and a rip-and-replace is where most of the money and most of the risk goes. We build the layer above it instead: approvals, inventory, grant or project tracking and reporting that reads live data. Our note on integrating with an ERP rather than replacing it covers the approach.
We build to the technical safeguards HIPAA expects: encryption in transit and at rest, unique user identity, role-based access, automatic logoff, integrity checks and audit logs of who saw which record. We will not call the result HIPAA-compliant, because compliance covers your policies, training, contracts and physical controls as well as the software. Whether a business associate agreement is needed is a decision for your counsel. Clinical integration is normally through HL7 or FHIR interfaces your own team controls.
You get a written quote after a free scoping call. As typical ranges from our service pages: an internal tool or MVP is £8,000–£20,000 over 4–8 weeks, a business web application £20,000–£45,000 over 2–4 months, and a larger platform or modernisation £45,000–£80,000+ over 3–6 months. A focused machine learning model is £8,000–£25,000 and a single-purpose AI agent £5,000–£12,000. Those are quoted in pounds and invoiced in dollars; cloud and third-party licence costs are separate and stay in your own accounts.
No. We are fully remote, so meetings and day-to-day work happen over video, Slack or Teams and a shared board. Where a project would normally open with an on-site workshop, we run it as two or three shorter video sessions in your Eastern Time working hours instead, which works better over video than one long day does.
