Who wrote this, and what is our interest?
SpiderHunts wrote this article, and we build custom AI receptionists, so we have an interest in the build-or-buy question. No provider paid to be included or reviewed this article. We checked every product on its own website, and anything we could not verify, including UK availability, is said plainly. Details and prices are as of October 2026 and change often.
What should a UK business look for in an AI receptionist?
- UK numbers and keeping your own. You should be able to forward your existing number rather than change it, and the service should support UK numbers.
- When it answers. All calls, out of hours only, or only when your lines are busy. Flexible forwarding rules let you start small.
- A route to a person. Warm transfer to your team, a message with the details, or a human answering service behind the AI.
- Booking into your real diary. Sending a booking link is not the same as booking into your practice management system or calendar.
- Honesty. It should tell callers they are speaking to an AI, and say it does not know rather than guess.
- Call records and data. Summaries, transcripts and recordings, where they are stored, for how long, and whether a data processing agreement is offered.
- How it is priced. Per call, per minute, per caller or a tailored quote. The cheapest headline price is not always the cheapest at your volume.

Which AI receptionist suits a managed UK service?
Moneypenny is a long-established UK call answering company, and its AI Receptionist answers calls around the clock, takes messages, books appointments, qualifies leads, handles common questions and routes calls. Moneypenny sets up the call flows and knowledge base for you. Its live receptionists step in when a call is complex, the caller is frustrated or they ask for a person, and you choose whether escalations go to Moneypenny or to your own team.
It suits businesses that want a managed service with people behind it and do not want to build anything. As of October 2026, pricing is tailored and quoted by sales rather than published.
Which AI receptionist suits a small budget?
Answer's AI virtual receptionist is aimed at UK small businesses. It answers calls, captures messages, answers common questions and collects caller details, with messages sent by email and optionally SMS. Higher plans add calendar booking and live call transfer. As of October 2026 its entry plan is listed at £10 a month plus 85p per call, with bundled-call plans above it.
It suits sole traders and small offices whose main problem is missed calls and lost messages, rather than complex bookings.
What about the US tools that appear in most reviews?
Many "best AI receptionist" lists are written for the US market. Smith.ai offers an AI receptionist with optional escalation to its human receptionists, who are based in North America. Rosie and Goodcall are self-serve AI phone answering tools. All three are real, established products, but as of October 2026 none of their websites documents UK phone numbers or UK-specific service, and they price in US dollars. If you are considering one, ask directly about UK numbers, call routing from a UK line and where call data is stored before you sign up.
What about developer platforms such as Retell AI and Vapi?
These are not ready-made receptionists. They are platforms for building voice agents, which a developer configures with prompts, knowledge, integrations and a phone number.
- Retell AI charges per minute on a pay-as-you-go basis and lists the United Kingdom among the countries it supports for phone service on its pricing page.
- Vapi charges per minute, with model, voice and phone line costs on top. Its free numbers are US-only, and its documentation says to import a number from another provider for international use.
- Bland is a developer and enterprise voice agent platform with per-minute pricing.
- Synthflow is sold to enterprises; its pricing page states enterprise contracts start at $30,000 a year as of October 2026.
The platform fee is the small part. The real work is designing the call flows, connecting the diary and CRM, testing with real callers, and monitoring after launch. That is either your developers' time or a build partner's.
When is a custom AI receptionist worth it?
A ready-made service is usually the right answer if you mainly need calls answered and messages taken. A custom build is worth considering when the receptionist must work with your own systems: booking directly into practice management software, checking a case or job record, qualifying leads to your own rules, or following different scripts for different call types.
That is what we build at SpiderHunts: a custom AI receptionist for UK businesses, set up around your call types, connected to your diary and CRM, and handing over to your team on your terms. We also build sector versions, such as an AI receptionist for dental practices and an AI receptionist for law firms. Every build gets a written quote with scope and exclusions agreed up front.
How do you introduce an AI receptionist without annoying callers?
- Have it say it is an AI assistant at the start of the call.
- Start with out-of-hours calls or overflow, so your team keeps the daytime calls while you check the summaries.
- Give callers a way to reach a person at any point.
- Keep answers short; people on the phone want the next step, not a paragraph.
- Review summaries and recordings weekly for the first month and fix what it gets wrong.
