Repair or Replace?

Last updated:

Rebuilding is often the wrong answer

Businesses rebuild sites that needed three specific fixes, losing their content structure and search visibility in the process.

Diagnose before deciding. A slow site with heavy images and cheap hosting is a two-day fix, not a rebuild.

Five signs it genuinely needs replacing

  1. The theme is abandoned and cannot be safely updated
  2. Performance cannot be fixed without removing the theme
  3. Editing is so awkward that content has gone stale
  4. The structure cannot support what the business now sells
  5. It has been compromised repeatedly
The third is the one businesses tolerate longest. A site nobody can update is a site that is quietly getting less accurate every month.

What is usually fixable instead

SymptomUsual fix
SlowImages, hosting, plugin cleanup
Looks datedDesign refresh on the same structure
Forms not arrivingSMTP configuration
Poor search visibilityContent and technical fixes
Hard to add a page typeCustom post type, not a rebuild

If you do rebuild, protect what works

  • Keep the URLs, or map every one to its replacement
  • Keep the pages that bring traffic and enquiries
  • Keep the content structure that works
  • Launch, then verify redirects and forms the same day

The middle option

A new theme on the existing content and structure gives a fresh site for a fraction of the cost and none of the search risk.

That is the right answer more often than either fixing individual complaints or starting over.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a site last?

Five to seven years for structure, three to four for design. Well-maintained sites last considerably longer.

Will rebuilding hurt our rankings?

Only if URLs change without redirects or content is dropped. Done carefully, no.

Can we rebuild in stages?

Yes — new templates rolled out section by section. Lower risk and easier to fund.

How do we decide?

List what is actually wrong. If it is three specific things, fix them. If it is the foundation, rebuild.
