Building a List That Is Actually Yours
Last updated:
The list is the only audience you own
Search rankings change, social platforms change their rules, advertising costs rise. An email list is the one audience nobody can take away.
That makes list building one of the more durable things a business website does.
Capture properly
- Offer something genuinely worth an email address
- Ask at the right moment, not on arrival
- One field — the email — unless you need more
- Explicit consent, recorded, with what they are signing up for
- Confirmation so the address is real
“Sign up for our newsletter” converts poorly because it offers nothing. A specific useful thing converts several times better.
Segment from the start
Record what page they signed up from and what they were interested in. That lets you send relevant things later rather than the same message to everybody.
Retrofitting segmentation onto an undifferentiated list is much harder than capturing it at the point of signup.
What to automate
- A welcome sequence that delivers what was promised
- Follow-up after an enquiry that did not convert
- Re-engagement for people who stopped opening
- Post-purchase or post-project sequences
Consent and compliance
Record when and how consent was given, and what was said at the time. Unsubscribing must be one click and must actually work.
Buying lists is both ineffective and, in many jurisdictions, unlawful. It also damages your sending reputation permanently.
