The short answer
Washroom complaints usually come from consumables running out between scheduled rounds. A sensor that reports a dispenser is low turns a guess into a task, and a footfall counter tells you when a round is actually needed.
The economics depend on how many sensors you need and how often someone has to change their batteries, which is the part vendors mention least.
What sensors report
- Dispenser levels for soap, paper and towels
- Entries and exits, giving footfall since the last service
- Bin fill level where fitted
- Environmental readings such as humidity, which correlate with use
- A feedback button for occupants to report a problem
The feedback button is the cheapest and frequently the most useful. It converts a complaint that would have gone to the client into a task in your system.

The third row is the operationally dangerous one. A dead sensor reports nothing, which is indistinguishable from a washroom nobody used, so devices need a heartbeat check.
Trial properly
- Pick one building with a mix of busy and quiet washrooms.
- Record complaints and consumable usage for a period beforehand.
- Fit sensors and run the existing schedule unchanged for a month.
- Compare what the sensors say against what the schedule assumed.
- Then change the schedule and measure again.
Step three is the one people skip. Running unchanged first tells you whether the sensors are telling you anything you did not know.
Make the alert actionable
An alert that a dispenser is low is only useful if it reaches someone who is nearby and has stock. Routing to the right person, with the location and what is needed, is what turns data into a cleaner washroom.
Alerts that go to a dashboard nobody watches produce the same outcome as no sensors at all, at considerably greater cost.
