The same code on a discount forum
Your body has negotiated discounts for members with a handful of partners: a professional indemnity insurer, a publisher, a software provider and a training company. The members' area lists each benefit with one discount code. The codes have not changed in years.
A partner rings to say they have seen your members' code on a discount website, used by people who are clearly not members. They also ask how many of your members have used the offer this year, because they are deciding whether to renew the arrangement. You cannot tell them. Meanwhile, some members say they had no idea the benefits existed.
Why member benefits leak and go unseen
Benefits are published as static content, with one code for everyone, and nothing links them to membership or to use.
- A single shared code for every member, which is easy to pass on.
- Codes are never rotated.
- Lapsed members keep using codes they saved.
- Nobody tracks which members reveal or use an offer.
- Partners cannot see redemption, so they cannot judge the value.
- Members do not know which benefits apply to their grade or situation.
The central problem is that benefits are treated as a web page rather than something given to a specific member.
What leaky benefits cost
Partners who see their offer abused or cannot see results are less willing to renew or improve the deal. That weakens the benefits package, which is part of why people join and renew.
Members who never hear about benefits that would save them money are less likely to feel their subscription is good value. And the body has no evidence about which benefits members use when deciding which to promote or drop.
How we build the benefits area
- Benefits sit in the members' area behind sign-in, so only current members, checked against the membership record, can see offer details.
- Where partners can issue unique codes, each member receives their own when they reveal the offer, from a batch the partner supplies or through the partner's API.
- Where only a shared code is possible, it is shown to signed-in members only and rotated on a schedule agreed with the partner.
- Reveals are recorded against the member, and redemptions are matched back where the partner can share them.
- Offers can be targeted by grade, sector or career stage, so members see what is relevant to them.
- Members are told about benefits that suit them at sensible moments, such as joining and renewal, following their contact preferences.
- Each partner receives a usage report, and your team sees which benefits members value.
| Partner arrangement | How the code is issued | What can be reported |
|---|---|---|
| Unique codes supplied in batches | One code per member on reveal | Reveals and redemptions |
| Partner API for codes | Code generated per member | Reveals and redemptions |
| Single shared code only | Shown to signed-in members, rotated | Reveals only |
| Offer by member number | Partner checks number with you | Checks made |
Partner terms stay between you and the partner. The system gives both sides accurate information about what members actually use.
Benefits afterwards
A new member sees the benefits that match her grade in her welcome email and reveals the software discount with her own code. The insurer receives a quarterly report of reveals and redemptions and renews the arrangement with a better offer. The publisher's shared code changes each quarter, so the old one stops working on discount sites.
When your team reviews the benefits package, it can see which offers members value and which nobody uses.
Recognise your member benefits?
- Partner discount codes are the same for every member.
- Codes have appeared on public discount sites.
- Partners ask for usage figures you cannot give.
- Lapsed members keep using benefits.
- Members do not know which benefits exist.
