The short answer
Adding points to training that people did not want to do produces training with points on it. The mechanics that help are short sessions, immediate feedback and visible relevance.
Where game structure genuinely helps is in practice and scenario work, not in scoring.
What actually improves completion

Saved progress sounds trivial and is not. Losing twenty minutes to an interruption is how a lot of training gets abandoned permanently.
Where game mechanics do help
- Practising a decision repeatedly with varied inputs.
- Safe failure, where getting it wrong has no real consequence.
- Branching scenarios that show the result of a choice.
- Spaced repetition of the things people forget.
- Progression that unlocks harder cases as competence grows.
Point two is the strongest argument for the format. Practising a difficult conversation or a rare emergency safely is genuinely hard to do any other way.
Leaderboards need care
Public ranking motivates the people already near the top and demotivates everyone else. In a workplace it can also create pressure to rush rather than to learn.
If you use comparison, compare people against their own previous performance rather than against colleagues.
Measure learning, not completion
- Did behaviour change in the actual work
- Did the errors the training targets reduce
- Can people still do it some months later
- Do they say it was worth the time
- Completion rate, as a hygiene measure only
Completion is the easiest number to collect and the least informative. Everyone completes mandatory training and it does not follow that anything changed.
