The Habits Behind Stores That Work
Last updated:
It is routine rather than insight
The stores that grow steadily are not the ones with the cleverest ideas. They are the ones with a handful of routines that get done every week regardless of how busy things are.
Nothing on the list below is difficult. All of it is easy to skip when there are orders to pack.
Weekly
- Orders, revenue and conversion against the previous week
- Anything out of stock that should not be
- Support backlog cleared
- Any failed integrations or alerts checked
Monthly
- Support contact reasons reviewed, top one fixed
- Return reasons reviewed, worst product addressed
- App list and bill checked for anything unused
- One improvement chosen and made
- Email sent to the customer list
The contact-reason review is the highest-return half hour in the month. It tells you precisely what your store fails to explain.
Quarterly
- Contribution margin recalculated per product
- Supplier prices and lead times checked
- Store speed tested on a phone
- Which of traffic, conversion or retention is currently the constraint
Annually
| Task | Why |
|---|---|
| Full product data audit | Consistency drifts |
| Full app and integration review | Things accumulate |
| Export everything | Continuity |
| Pricing review across the catalogue | Costs have moved |
| Review what worked this year | Most stores never do |
Frequently asked questions
How long do these routines take?
Weekly, twenty minutes. Monthly, about two hours. Quarterly, half a day. Annually, a day or two.
What if we cannot keep them up?
Keep the monthly ones. The contact-reason review and the single improvement are the two that compound.
Who should do them?
Whoever makes the decisions. These are not tasks to delegate, because the point is the understanding they produce.
Is this enough on its own?
For steady improvement, largely yes. Step changes need bigger decisions, and these routines tell you which ones to make.
No regular routine for the numbers?
Twenty minutes weekly and two hours monthly is enough. It is what separates busy from growing.
