Repair, Improve or Replace

Last updated:

Rebuilding is usually not the answer

Store owners frequently conclude that a disappointing store needs replacing, when in fact it needs four specific fixes. The rebuild then loses content, search visibility and reviews for no benefit.

Diagnose before deciding. The list of actual problems is usually shorter than the feeling of dissatisfaction suggests.

Genuine reasons to rebuild

  1. The platform cannot support a requirement your business now has
  2. The theme is so modified it cannot be updated and is unfixably slow
  3. The product data model cannot express what you now sell
  4. You are paying more in workarounds than a rebuild would cost
“It looks dated” is a design refresh, not a rebuild. Those are very different amounts of money and risk.

Usually fixable instead

If you do rebuild, protect what works

  • Map every URL to its replacement before launch
  • Migrate reviews — they are hard-won and hard to replace
  • Keep the product data, improved rather than re-entered
  • Keep the content that brings traffic
  • Launch quietly and verify before promoting

The middle option

A new theme applied to the existing products, content and reviews gives a fresh store for a fraction of the cost and none of the migration risk.

That is the right answer far more often than either patching individual complaints or starting over.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a rebuild cost?

£8,000–£30,000 for a store of any substance, plus the risk to existing visibility. A theme change is a fraction of that.

Will we lose search visibility?

Only if URLs change without redirects or content is dropped. Done carefully, no.

Can we migrate reviews?

Usually, with the right tooling. Confirm it before committing — losing accumulated reviews is a genuine setback.

How do we decide?

List what is actually wrong. If it is four specific things, fix them. If it is the foundation, rebuild.
