Choosing a Framework for a Business Application

Last updated:

They are all capable

Django, the mature PHP frameworks and the better low-code platforms will all produce a working business application. The differences are practical rather than about capability.

The framework argument matters far less than most technical discussions suggest. What matters is who will maintain it and how much you will change it.

What actually decides it

  1. Your team's expertise, if you have one
  2. Whether you need Python for data or machine learning work alongside
  3. How much customisation you expect, which rules out low-code at some point
  4. Hiring availability in your market
  5. Hosting and operational familiarity

Where each fits

ChoiceSuits
DjangoPython needed alongside; strong admin requirements
PHP frameworkCheap hosting; wide developer availability
Low-code platformSimple workflows; no development capability
JavaScript full stackGenuinely interactive interfaces

Low-code has a ceiling

Low-code platforms are genuinely useful for straightforward workflows and they have a point beyond which customisation becomes fighting the platform.

That point arrives sooner than vendors suggest and later than developers claim. Prove the requirement on a platform, then rebuild what outgrows it.

The decision you can defer

Keeping business logic separate from the framework means a future framework change is a rewrite of the edges rather than of the system.

That discipline costs little and it preserves the option properly rather than nominally, which is the practical answer to a decision people over-think.

Frequently asked questions

Which do you recommend?

It depends on your team and requirements. We build in both Django and PHP and we have recommended low-code platforms where they fit.

Does the choice affect cost?

Marginally. Requirements complexity dominates the estimate far more than framework choice does.

Can we change framework later?

Expensive, and less so if business logic was kept separate. That is the main argument for the separation.

What about hiring?

Both Python and PHP developers are widely available. Check your specific market rather than assuming.
