Quick answer — TL;DR

Consent requirements mean a share of your traffic is invisible to conventional analytics. Design for that: measure server-side where you can, focus on conversions rather than sessions, and treat analytics as directional rather than exact.

Your numbers are already incomplete

Between consent refusals, tracking prevention in browsers and ad blockers, a meaningful proportion of visits do not appear in conventional analytics. The exact share varies by audience and it is never zero.

This matters less than people fear, provided you stop treating analytics as an exact count and start treating it as a consistent sample for comparison.

  • Server-side events — form submissions, orders, sign-ups. These happen regardless of client-side tracking.
  • Conversion counts from your own systems, which are complete by definition.
  • Search Console data, which is not affected by on-site consent.
  • Revenue by source captured at the point of enquiry and carried into the CRM.
The most reliable marketing measurement in most businesses is not in the analytics tool at all. It is the source field on the enquiry record, carried through to whether that enquiry became revenue.

A banner that is hard to decline generates complaints and, increasingly, regulatory attention. It also produces consent data you cannot rely on.

  1. Accept and reject equally prominent
  2. No tracking scripts fire before a choice is made
  3. Choice remembered, and easy to change later
  4. The banner must not block the page on mobile or trap keyboard focus

Focus on comparison, not absolute numbers

If your measurement is consistent, a 20% rise is still a 20% rise even when you only see part of the traffic. Problems arise when you compare across a change in measurement — a new banner, a platform migration, a script that stopped firing.

Record the date of any measurement change alongside your data, so a step in the chart can be explained rather than investigated for a week.

Consider a lighter-weight tool

Privacy-focused analytics products avoid personal data and sometimes avoid the consent requirement entirely, depending on configuration and jurisdiction. They give you less detail and more coverage.

For many business sites that is a good trade, particularly alongside server-side conversion tracking that gives you the numbers that matter.

Ask about your project

Do we legally need a cookie banner?

It depends on what you set and your jurisdiction — strictly necessary cookies generally do not require consent, analytics and marketing ones usually do. Take advice on your specific setup.

Will server-side tracking avoid consent requirements?

Not automatically. The obligation follows the processing of personal data, not the technical method. Server-side measurement of your own conversions is different from server-side ad tracking.

How do we handle attribution with incomplete data?

Capture source at enquiry into your own systems, keep it simple, and accept approximation. A consistently applied simple model beats an elaborate one built on gaps.

Is Google Analytics still fine to use?

Many businesses use it, and the regulatory position has shifted more than once. Configure it carefully, and make sure your critical measurement does not depend solely on it.
