What to Check on an Inherited Site

Last updated:

Access and ownership first

  1. Is the domain registered to your business?
  2. Is the hosting account in your name?
  3. Do you have administrator access to WordPress?
  4. Do you have the code, if anything was custom-built?
  5. Are there accounts belonging to people who have left?
Start here, because everything else is academic if you cannot actually control the site.

Then check it is not compromised

  • Unfamiliar administrator accounts
  • Files modified recently that nobody changed
  • Unexpected redirects or injected content
  • Search results showing pages you did not create
  • Outbound mail you did not send

Understand what it is built on

Which theme, which plugins, what is custom, and whether any of it is abandoned. That determines what you can safely change.

An abandoned theme or a heavily-modified core is a finding that changes your plans.

Write it down

A one-page summary: what it is built on, where things live, what is wrong, and what needs doing first.

That document is worth having whether you keep the site, fix it or replace it.

Frequently asked questions

What if the previous developer will not hand over access?

Domain and hosting can usually be recovered through the registrar and host with proof of ownership. It is tedious rather than impossible.

How do we know if it has been hacked?

A security scan plus checking for unfamiliar admin accounts and recently modified files. Most compromises are not subtle.

Should we rebuild immediately?

Not until you understand what you have. Audit first; the answer is often that specific fixes are enough.

How long does an audit take?

Two to four hours for a thorough one. Worth it before making any decision.
