A Checklist You Can Run Yourself

Last updated:

Start on a phone

Open your store on your phone, on mobile data, somewhere away from your office wifi. Time how long the homepage takes, then a collection page, then a product page.

If any of those feels slow to you, it is slow. Your customers are less patient than you are, because they have no investment in it.

Then buy something

  1. Add a product to the basket and go through checkout
  2. Note when you first learn the delivery cost
  3. Count the steps and the fields
  4. Check the confirmation email arrives and reads properly
  5. Then refund it and check that email too
The moment you discover the delivery cost is the single most important observation in this whole audit. If it is at the final step, that is your biggest problem.

Check the product pages

  • Does it answer the question you get asked most?
  • Are the specifications complete?
  • Are there reviews, and are they visible?
  • Are the images yours, or the supplier's?
  • Is delivery information on the page?

Check the bill and the apps

List every app, its monthly cost and what it is for. Identify overlaps and anything nobody has opened in six months.

Then look at what they load on your pages. That combination usually finds both a saving and a speed improvement.

Frequently asked questions

How often should we do this?

Twice a year. Stores accumulate apps, images and inconsistencies quietly, and a regular check catches it early.

What if we find a lot?

Fix them in the order above. Delivery clarity and speed almost always produce the largest change.

Can we test the checkout without a real payment?

Shopify offers a test mode, and a real order with a real card tests the full path including the gateway. Do the real one once.

Should we get an external audit?

Useful for a second perspective. Run this yourself first — the obvious findings are usually the valuable ones.

Never bought from your own store on a phone?

Do that this afternoon. It finds more than any report. Happy to audit properly if you want the detail.
