When a Competitor Announces AI and You Have Not

Last updated:

Announcements and advantages differ

A press release saying a competitor is “leveraging AI” usually means a pilot, a feature or a supplier relationship. It rarely means their customers are getting something you cannot match.

Before responding, find out what specifically changed for the people buying from them.

Three questions

  1. What can their customers do now that they could not before?
  2. Have you lost a deal because of it, specifically?
  3. Would matching it change anything about why customers choose you?
If the answer to all three is no, the competitive pressure is on your marketing rather than your operations, and it costs a great deal less to answer there.

Where AI genuinely creates advantage

  • Responding to enquiries in minutes rather than days
  • Absorbing volume growth without adding staff
  • Fewer errors reaching customers
  • Service outside business hours without night staff

All four are operational. None requires an announcement.

The wrong response

Commissioning a visible AI feature to match a competitor's marketing. It is expensive, it is usually shallow, and customers see through it quickly.

The better response is being measurably faster or more accurate, which customers experience directly rather than reading about.

What to do this quarter

  1. Ask your last ten prospects why they chose or did not choose you
  2. Measure your response time against what you promise
  3. Find the process that most limits your capacity
  4. Automate that one thing properly

That sequence produces a real advantage. Matching an announcement produces a matching announcement.

Frequently asked questions

What if customers ask whether we use AI?

Answer honestly and specifically: what you use it for, and what a person still does. That answer builds more confidence than a vague yes.

Should we announce our AI work?

Announce the outcome — faster responses, fewer errors. Customers care about that; they do not care about the technology.

Are we falling behind by waiting?

Only if a competitor is genuinely delivering something better. Capability announcements are not the same thing and the gap between them is usually large.

How fast can we catch up if we need to?

A focused integration is four to eight weeks. That is a shorter gap than most competitive advantages last.
