Teachers do not need another platform; they need their evenings back
Ask a secondary teacher what they would pay for and the answer is rarely "an AI tutor". It is marking thirty essays faster, writing end-of-term reports without losing a weekend, and adapting a worksheet for three different reading levels before period two.

For a young product, tutoring companies with twenty to two hundred tutors often make a better first market. They buy faster and the features they need, such as progress reporting and scheduling, carry less regulatory weight. Schools can follow once you have references and mature documentation.
Product ideas with genuine pull
- Resource drafting from a scheme of work. Generate worksheets, quizzes and differentiated versions aligned to the curriculum the school actually follows, for the teacher to edit.
- Marking support. Read student answers against a mark scheme, propose marks and feedback comments, and let the teacher accept or change each one.
- Report writing. Draft individual reports from the teacher's own grades and short notes, in the school's tone and length.
- Tutoring session summaries. Turn a tutor's quick notes into a parent-friendly update and a record of topics covered.
- Scheduling and matching for tutoring companies. Match students to tutors by subject, level and availability, and handle rescheduling by message.
- Parent communication triage. Classify and draft replies to routine parent emails, routing anything pastoral or sensitive to staff immediately.
Safeguarding and data protection come first
Children's data gets special attention under UK GDPR, and the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code applies to online services likely to be used by children. Schools will want a data protection impact assessment, clarity on where data is processed, and confirmation that student work is not used to train anyone's model. Under the EU AI Act, AI used to evaluate learning outcomes or determine access to education is classed as high-risk, which matters if you sell into EU schools.
- Prefer teacher-facing tools over student-facing ones for the first release
- Where students do interact with AI, log conversations and make them reviewable by staff
- Detect and escalate safeguarding disclosures to a designated person, never handle them in the bot
- Keep marks and grades as teacher decisions, with AI suggestions clearly labelled
- Minimise personal data sent to model providers; often names are not needed at all
In a school, the question is not whether the AI is clever. It is what happens when a child tells it something worrying.
Why AI tutors are harder than they look
An AI tutor has to be accurate in the subject, pitched at the right level, resistant to being used to do homework, safe in every conversation, and engaging enough that a child comes back without being made to. Each of those is a serious piece of work. Some well-funded companies are attempting it. For a small vertical startup, it is a very expensive first product.
A middle path works better: AI practice questions and hints inside a structure a teacher or tutor sets, with progress visible to the adult. The adult stays accountable, and the product still feels modern to parents.
A worked example for a tutoring company
Take an illustrative tutoring business with 120 tutors delivering around 1,500 sessions a month. If each tutor spends ten minutes after a session writing notes and a parent update, that is 250 hours of monthly admin, much of it unpaid or grudgingly paid. The owner cares for two further reasons. Parents who receive regular, specific updates renew more often, and tutors who are not doing evening paperwork stay longer. If your plan relies on selling to individual state schools one at a time with a small sales team, the cycle may outlast your runway. If the idea only works as a student-facing chatbot, budget seriously for safeguarding design and moderation. And if the main management information system vendor in your market already bundles report writing, find a sharper angle.
